Psychics and Mediums
Psychics and Mediums
by Dr.
Mark Pitstick
C.W.
Leadbeater stated, “It is one of the commonest of
mistakes to consider that the limit of our power of
perception is also the limit of all there is to
perceive.” Just because something can not currently
be fully explained by scientific method doesn’t
preclude its existence.
Input from
authentic mediums and channelers is an important
source of evidence about spiritual realities. Many
people aren’t aware of the legitimacy of this
category because past references to the paranormal
were sometimes linked with the occult, satanic,
weird, or nonsensical. Examining these topics with
open-minded skepticism, however, may fill in pieces
of life’s puzzle for you.
Some
churches and people dismiss mediumship as demonic in
nature. However, history reports multiple examples
of people and miracles that were considered as
demonic by the established church and now are viewed
as valid. For example, the apparitions at Lourdes,
France are now considered to blessed, but in the 19th
century, Bernadette Soubirous—an ignorant peasant
girl who communicated with Mother Mary—was
considered mentally incompetent. Authentic mediums
categorically deny any evil intention but, rather,
consider their special gifts as a sacred trust to be
used to help others.
Admittedly, there are and have been fraudulent
mediums and channelers and caution must be exercised
as with any endeavor. If just one medium, however,
has genuine abilities to communicate with the Spirit
World, then that information is vital. There are a
number of mediums whose work has been authenticated
by top scientists and many clients. Their messages
are overwhelmingly reassuring that there is life
after death for everyone. Being with the Infinite
Light, these mediums agree, is always an open-ended
possibility because that’s our Source and
birthright.
In a 1981
Gallup poll, 42% claimed to have had some type of
contact with the dead but this is not just a recent
phenomena. Reports of communication with discarnate
beings—souls without bodies—date back thousands of
years. In more modern times, the scientific study
of spirit contact began when the Society for
Psychical Research was founded in London in 1882.
Many
respected scientists and well-known persons have
believed in the existence of the spirit world. Sir
Isaac Newton deemed the subject of psychic phenomena
worthy of research but was censured by the Church
and peers. Sigmund Freud was a member of the
English and American Societies for Psychical
Research and stated, “If I had my life to live over
again, I should devote myself to psychical research
rather than to psychoanalysis.” Carl Jung also
researched and wrote extensively about the
paranormal. J.B. Rhine, professor of psychology at
Duke University in the 1930’s, primarily focused on
ESP research but before his death in 1980, he called
for “further experimentation to learn about death
and postmortem survival.”
In We
Don’t Die, Martin and Romanowski state that
other highly respected figures, from Socrates and
Plato to Edgar Cayce and Helen Keller had personal
experiences in contacting departed souls. Séances
occurred in the Lincoln White House.
In an
interview with Scientific American, Thomas
Edison stated, “Therefore, if personality exists
after what we call death, it’s reasonable to
conclude that those who leave this earth would like
to communicate with those they have left here. . . .
I do claim that it is possible to construct an
apparatus which will be so delicate that if there
are personalities in another existence or sphere who
wish to get in touch with us . . . this apparatus
will at least give them a better opportunity.”
Edison was working on a machine to communicate with
disincarnate spirits but passed on before it was
completed.
In
Messages from the Masters, Brian Weiss, M.D.,
notes, “As I have explored more and more of the
human mind and the limits of consciousness, I have
come across some people with extraordinary
abilities. Some can access information not normally
available though the five senses. They seem to
possess a sixth sense, an inner knowing or
intuition, and sometimes the information received in
this manner can be quite accurate. Others have
mediumistic abilities, the capacity to receive and
to transmit messages and knowledge from beings on
‘the other side,’ or from other sources of
consciousness outside the usual limits of the body
and the brain.”
Soul
Proof presents fascinating examples of authentic
mediumship as well as scientific research that
strongly indicates the validity of some psychics.
