Release the Past For an Optimal Present
Facing difficulties, judgment, abuse, and more is usually part of the earthly experience. Those challenges present sublime opportunities for soul growth, adventures, and service to others. However, it’s important to release those difficulties after honoring and learning from them. Otherwise, you’re carrying lower energy emotions around from the past. This ‘dirty laundry’ can cause your life force to become more stagnant or inaccessible.
Similarly, you have stored many bits of information that are no longer needed. Trying to remember all those needless details takes up precious storage space in your brain. I was reminded of this after retiring from providing patient care for 50 years as a respiratory therapist, counselor, chiropractor, and nutritionist. I realized that much of that data – patient’s names, their history, how to take x-rays, etc. – was no longer needed. I set intentions and prayed to consciously release any unneeded information that didn’t need to be stored in my brain. For months after retiring from clinical practice, I dreamed of work-related situations such as I was one hour behind or I had to fire a staff member. Upon awakening, I reminded myself that it was time to release all that.
Likewise, some people live in the past so much that the golden present moment eludes them. They get stuck in the past and primarily identify with who they used to be. People may rehash old stories about ‘the good old days’, ‘those crazy college years’, or other parts of what happened long ago. I understand this may be appropriate for very old people who don’t have much going on now. However, for the most part, it’s not an optimal way to live.
This is especially true when ‘could have, would have, and should have’ is involved. Playing the ‘if only I could do it over again’ game can be particularly de-energizing when it involves broken relationships, financial losses, and other common events. Handled optimally, these can inform you and make you a stronger and wiser person. However, the past can haunt and hobble you when revisited too much and berating yourself about not doing better.
Releasing no longer needed information, the past, and ‘should haves’ can be immensely energizing and freeing. Doing this allows you to enjoy all the benefits of living in the present moment.
Different ways to describe this releasing process include: getting clear, ridding yourself of dirty laundry, releasing lower-energy emotions, and dealing with uncooked seeds. The good news is that safe, simple, and time-tested methods have helped many people release past details that aren’t needed. Pay extra attention after a challenging time, retirement, big change in your life, and as your body – or that of a loved one – is dying.
To release what doesn’t serve your highest self and purposes in the here and now . . .
- Let go and let G.O.D. This old saying is a great one, especially when you remember that you are one with The One and an integral part of Source now and always. (To learn more about my view of Creator, see article #13 What Is G.O.D. Really Like?) The acronym G.O.D. stands for the governing, organizing, and designing power and presence that is behind all life and IS all life. This view of the Divine makes more sense, to me and many people, than the idea of a dictatorial big guy in the sky who decides everything.
- Honor, appreciate, and learn from your past. These are key words I repeat anytime I catch myself excessively revisiting the past and how I could have done better. Chastising myself now about what I should have realized when I was twenty years old isn’t fair to either version of myself. Instead, I set an intention to bless the experience and use it to help myself and others. Then I let it go of it as much as I can in that moment since releasing the past is often a process that can take some time.
- Use chants and prayers that remind your brain about the big picture of life. One of my favorites is the following Hindu prayer that is commonly used with meditation and yoga. (You can search for the initial phrase and watch a YouTube video to learn the pronunciation.) Om Asato Maa, Sadgamaya. Tamaso Maa, Jyotir-Gamaya. Mrtyor Maa, Amritam Gamaya. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. (Lead us from unreal to real. Lead us from darkness to the Light. Lead us from the fear of death and change, to knowledge of immortality. Om peace, peace, peace.) Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu. (May the entire world be filled with peace and joy, love and light.)
- Use the Holistic Breathing Technique. This is one of the most powerful ways I know of to release old wounds / abuse, needless fears (which turns out to be all of them), and past limiting teachings from religion, culture, and family / tribe. Breathwork has been used across time and cultures to expand consciousness and assist healing. It harnesses the power of deep, noisy, diaphragmatic breathing and has music and positive affirmations in the background. This combination confounds the brain’s over-analysis that blocks perceptions of the greater reality.
- Pay attention to your dreams. Your brain and consciousness review topics while your body is resting. Notice which dreams pop up, especially recurring ones. Talk with trusted family and friends about these dreams to further process them. Ask yourself ‘Why would I dream that?’ and notice the first answer that floats in without your brain’s evaluation. This free association approach can provide useful clues about what you should deal with and release.
- Create extra room in your life’s cup. Old stories from Eastern cultures teach the importance of leaving room for new understandings and the mysteries of life. In one, a wise spiritual master was asked by a rich and egotistical man about how to open his mind to enlightenment. The teacher smiled and said they should discuss the topic over a cup of tea. As the master poured his visitor a cup, he poured until the tea overflowed onto the table and the robes of the wealthy man. The rich man shouted, ‘You’re spilling the tea all over. Can’t you see the cup is full?’ The master stopped pouring, smiled, and said: ‘You are like this tea cup – so full that nothing more can be added. Come back to me when your mind is more open.’
In another story, a student of martial arts asked his sensei: ‘How long will it take me to earn a black belt if I train regularly?’ The teacher answered, ‘Five years.’ ‘How long will it take me if I forget everything else in my life and devote all of my time to studies?’ the student asked. The master answered ‘Ten years.’ This timeless story also highlights the importance of balance.
- Avoid putting pressure or blame on yourself. Hindsight is 20/20. It’s easy to look back and clearly see what might have been a better fork in the road. However, it can be very difficult to discern which path to take – even if you were doing the best you could at the time. When you live in the present as much as possible, you have more of your bioenergy / soul power at your disposal. The following saying is one way to remember that: The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is today.
- In with the good air, out with the bad. This old saying sounds like deep breathing and for good reason. Releasing the old and living in the present – which really is a present, a gift from life – is like rhythmic breathing. Don’t let your beliefs, perspectives, or personal energy become stagnant and diminished. Keep breathing and remember that it’s all good, it’s all G.O.D.
I hope this information helps you further fine-tune your life by releasing what no longer serves you now.
