Why Did God Take My Loved One?
I once counseled a man who had attended church every week, taught Sunday School, prayed daily, studied the Bible, and had a great personal relationship with Creator. Then his young son died tragically and this man became bitter and scoffed at any idea of a loving and powerful Higher Power. He believed that God took his child and wondered why he was being punished.
Upon seeing and feeling his pain and despair, I momentarily felt anger toward Creator. What kind of world is this where little children die and their loved ones suffer so deeply? Asleep at the wheel again, O’ Omnipresent, Omnipotent, and Omniscient One?
And then I remembered.
I remembered the newer and more sensible images of Life Source that have emerged from contemporary spirituality evidence. The Ground of All Being is not a big man in the sky who controls all events: “I’ll smite this one, save this one, a miracle for her, a disappointment for him.”
One Mind is, rather, a life-force, a power, a supreme intelligence and energy that creates, sustains, and pervades all life. This phenomenon is an unfathomable depth of love, light, peace and joy. The Light is all and is in all. That includes you and me and little children who die.
Having remembered, I breathed deeply, recalling once again how exquisitely and perfectly designed this physical experience is for love, service, adventure, growth and enjoyment. Even when it doesn’t seem like it.
(Note: Please substitute ‘my spouse’, ‘my sibling’, ‘my friend’, ‘my pet’, or whatever relationship you had with someone who passed on. I originally wrote this for bereaved parents but it applies to any category of loved one.)
It’s difficult to move away from entrenched meanings of words. That’s why I use other synonyms for God: to help us evolve beyond ancient images of a big vengeful guy in the sky.
My current favorite name for Creator is E.L.G.O.D. The letters E and L, for Energizing and Loving. G.O.D. stands for the universal “guiding, organizing and designing” process in life that has historically been called many names in religions. (See Dr. Schwartz’s book The G.O.D. Experiments to learn more about the love, power, intelligence, and creativity that is behind and withinall life.)
The acronym E.L.G.O.D. captures more of the attributes of this ultimately ineffable phenomena. The letters EL also honor ancient names for the Divine. El or Al – the root words of Elohim, Eloha, Allah, and other sacred names for God – meant That, The One, or That One which expresses itself uniquely through all things.
It’s important to realize that the Light doesn’t make anyone, especially children, die at a certain time. The collective evidence suggests that we live in a free will universe and each soul gets to choose its time of coming and going. This view provides sensible answers to the mournful question, “Why did God take my child?”
To this question, well-meaning ministers over the ages have variously answered: “God works in mysterious ways.” Or, “The child was used by God to save lost souls.” Or, my personal least favorite, “God wanted to be with the little one.”
Needless to say, none of these answers is very satisfying to those who think for themselves, especially those in the midst of grief. In all of them, God becomes a puppeteer or a capricious dictator who mandates every detail of human existence despite the immense pain and suffering caused.
Much contemporary evidence indicates that a child in earth-years may be a very evolved soul. As such, that child didn’t need to go through a long earth school experience. That’s why the name of the Q & A I write for the Helping Parents Heal newsletter is: Evolved Souls Don’t Need a Long Earthly Experience.
We each pass on when it is time from a soul perspective. That is very difficult for family and friends to understand and accept when a child changes worlds. But it is eminently important to do so.

If you don’t yet have a meaningful relationship with the Infinite, take a moment to pray for that reunion. Spend time in meditation, walking in nature, or any other timeless activity that quiets the mind. Attend spiritual or religious services that focus on love and service, not fear. Seek and ye shall find. Ask and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find the Presence within and all around you.
The resulting faith AND knowledge will help you absolutely know that you are an ageless spiritual being who is forever deeply nestled within the heart of God. And so is each child who dies.
Death at any age is not an end, just a change of worlds at the right time and for meaningful reasons. You may not know the details now, but you will someday. And you will have a wonderful reunion with your departed loved ones. What’s more, if you quiet your mind and go beyond your five senses, you can detect them right now. They are urging you to be happy, to engage fully in life, and to honor their lives by serving others.

You can blame God as long as you want. He/She/It doesn’t mind. But when you are ready, you can take a higher road to understanding why your child died and how to best live afterwards. And that path, my friends, is the one that your soul and the soul of your child hope you take.
