Breathing Techniques
Special ways of breathing have been used by different cultures across time. Why? Because their wise men and women learned that how you breathe can powerfully affect how you feel, your health, your connection with yourself and Creator / Universe, and how much of reality you perceive. (If those don’t sound like ultra-important reasons to regularly practice breathing techniques, this article isn’t for you.)
In the Aramaic language, ‘breath’ and ‘spirit’ had the same root word. In the Far East, the words chi, ki, and pranasimultaneously conveyed meanings of breath, spirit, and life force. Breathing exercises are part of many orthodox and more esoteric religions and spiritual wisdom sources. Chanting, singing, exercise, love-making, and pranayama (yoga breathing exercises) are other ways to breathe deeply and rhythmically.
Here’s a simple way to realize how breathing affects you. First, breathe quickly and erratically for just one minute and notice what changes. Most people report feeling anxious and slightly out of control. Now breathe slowly and deeply for a minute and notice how you feel. Most people report feeling more peaceful, clear, and empowered.
In this article, I’ll share seven ways to use breathing and obtain many benefits. I’ll start with the simplest ones first. I recommend incorporating most or all of these into your selfcare program over time. After using them for a while, they become second nature and part of your life.
Diaphragmatic breathing is a key to techniques #1, 2, 5, 6, and 7. When you breathe in, let your abdomen relax and bulge out slightly as your diaphragm lowers for full inhalation. As you exhale, pull your abdominal muscles in and up. This raises the diaphragm to assist a full exhalation.
1. Three Breaths While Waiting
Some people fidget or look around anxiously while waiting, for example, for a link to open, a commercial to end, or someone to arrive. A more peaceful and energizing alternative is to take three slow deep diaphragmatic breaths. In that moment, notice how good it feels for your lungs to inflate fully. Let your body relax a bit each time you exhale. Then resume your activity.
2. Five Breaths Break
Treat yourself to a mini-break three times a day by taking ten slow deep diaphragmatic breaths. There is no set amount of time that is best for everyone. Just start breathing – in, hold, and out – to get in touch with what feels right for you.
Part of the allure of smoking – whether tobacco, pot, vaping, etc. – is taking a few moments to stop, relax, and breathe slowly and deeply. Some people have found they can quit smoking more easily when they do all that, but without the smoke.
3. Collect Sky Chi
As mentioned, chi means ‘lifeforce, breath, energy, spirit.’When I turned 50, I got a small chi symbol tattooed onto my left shoulder to remind me who and what I really am as my earth-suit ages.
If you can, stand up straight and reach both hands palms up toward the sky. Intend and ask to collect sky chi – energy and lifeforce – from above. While reaching up, breathe in rather forcefully and quickly. As you exhale the same way, bring your arms down. Let the insides of both elbows firmly percuss your liver and spleen, two filtration organs on the front of your body. Repeat ten or more times. While doing this, be clear about your goal and prayer: to collect more chi for the betterment of you and others.
Then repeat for the kidneys. That is, when you lower your arms let the inside of each elbow firmly percuss each side of your back just before the ribs end. This firm percussion can help jostle particles in the many tubules inside these four filters.
When you are finished, notice how you feel. I use this breathing technique after my yoga postures and before #4.

4. “Shining Skull” Breathing
The benefits of this ancient but simple technique include: clear mucous from the sinuses; remove carbon dioxide that accumulates from shallow breathing; gain energy and mental clarity; and strengthen the diaphragm.
Sit up straight with your mouth closed so you breathe in and out through your nostrils. Quickly and forcefully exhale by pulling your abdominal muscles up and in. Breathe in passively as your abdomen relaxes and slightly bulges outward. Repeat ten or more times. I use this technique just before beginning meditation.
5. Meditative Breathing
During meditation, use diaphragmatic breathing as described above. For more information about meditation, mantras, and more, see article #51 Meditation.
6. Nine Breaths Technique
I use this technique near the end of my 15-minute meditation. You can see the chi as a ball of white light, multicolored light, or however seems best. I repeat three times for each of the three parts.
As I inhale – I envision earth chi rising up through the first chakra (perineum), second (below the navel), third (solar plexus) and then the fourth or heart chakra (middle of the sternum). As I exhale, I affirm that the highest energies of love, peace, joy, gratitude, and more go out to all people everywhere. At the same time, these high energies go to every cell in my body.
Next, I inhale sky chi flowing into the seventh chakra (crown of the head), sixth (bridge of the nose), fifth (front of the throat), and into the heart center. As I exhale, I make the same intention as with earth chi.
Finally, as I inhale, I envision the highest energies entering my heart chakra from all around. As I exhale, I send that peace, joy, and love to all people everywhere and every cell of my body.
7. Holistic Breathing Technique
Because of its many and profound benefits for body, mind, and spirit, this technique is on my top ten list of highly recommended self-care practices. (The others include prayer, meditation, yoga, whole food and at least 50% raw diet, exercise, loving relationships, quiet time in nature, meaningful lifework, and service to others.)
This approach involves forty minutes of noisy, open-mouth, diaphragmatic breathing. The audio product I created initially has peaceful music that relaxes you. Then it becomes more energized and changes so the brain can’t analyze and limit perceptions like it usually does. In the background, I coach you with positive affirmations such as ‘I have the right to feel all that I feel’ and ‘Who I am is enough.’
See article #70 Holistic Breathing Technique to learn more about this powerfully life-altering approach.
I hope you gift yourself with the time to use these breathing approaches. You deserve it. Just add one or two to your daily practice and add more as your energy and clarity increase. Over time, you will notice an increased peace, joy, love, and other higher energies in every aspect of your life. And that, in turn, will bless everyone you encounter.
