Expanding Your View of Life

Your five senses may indicate that you are just your physical body but, in truth, you are much more than that.  This scientific fact has everything to do with how you handle life’s biggest changes and challenges: the bodily death of loved ones, financial loss, illness and disability, broken relationships, etc.  You know the list.

These facts indicate how little of the fullness of life, the greater reality, you perceive:

  • Most humans use less than 1 percent of their brain capacities.
  • Much of your brain’s function is inhibitory. That is, it purposely limits and filters what you can sense.  Otherwise, you would be bombarded by sensory input and couldn’t function on earth.
  • Light, energy, and information is ultimately what life is comprised of. If all the light, energy, and information that exists on earth were the size of Mt. Everest, the portion your five senses can detect would be the size of a golf ball.  As such, most humans are looking at life through a pinhole in a wall but think they are seeing the full picture.

The universe is amazingly vast on a macro scale (to get a better sense of this, watch the Hubble 3D movie or the sky with a telescope on a clear night):

  • Our planet travels at 66,000 miles per hour, journeys around the sun each year, and rotates on its axis.  And yet, to limited human senses, earth appears to be standing still.
  • Approximately 200 billion stars like our Sun exist in our galaxy, the Milky Way.
  • Over 100 billion galaxies exist within just the currently known physical universe.
  • In this vast universe, nebulae birth cocoons of energy and matter that have the potential to form new galaxies.
  • High energy physicists theorize the existence of multiple universes and dimensions in an ever-expanding cosmos.  This view opens the way for simultaneous or parallel realities.

Now let’s go the other way, on a micro scale (to gain a better sense of this, watch a video showing a microscopic view of what’s inside a drop of pond water):

  • Your body’s 15 trillion cells each have smaller components (organelles)
  • These, in turn, consist of molecules, atoms and sub-atomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons) that are made of even smaller particles (quarks, etc.)
  • If the nucleus of a hydrogen molecule were the size of a marble, its single electron would be ½ mile away.  That’s a lot of space amidst seeming solidity.
  • Upon closer inspection, the tiniest particles have properties of both a wave and a physical particle that exist as an interplay between energy and matter.

What’s all this have to do with spiritual awareness?  Well, simply put, everything.

Millennia ago, humans in many cultures often had a difficult time comprehending the vastness of life.  (I make the distinction about ‘many cultures’ because some had well developed worldviews.  Examples are Hindu Rishis, Asian Taoists, Buddhists, and Native Americans who were very aware of and aligned with Supreme Intelligence.  However, those didn’t impact Middle Eastern views that birthed three influential religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  Those religions, in turn, greatly affected people in Europe and, over time, throughout the world.)

Many people did the best they could to understand life, but had only their five senses with which to collect data.  As such, almost all of them had a very narrow view of reality.  They devised stories in an attempt to make sense of what was going on.  Those stories were passed down through the ages verbally and eventually in written form.

Have you ever played the game where a message is relayed from one person to another in a circle?  The final message is almost always hilariously different from the original one.  That happened at least a bit, no doubt, with these stories.

From their limited perspective, only what could be perceived by the senses was considered real.  Everything else was deemed imaginary – from a materialistic or secular viewpoint – or spiritual from a religious or nonsecular perspective.  Scary events such as weather-related catastrophes, wars, famine, plagues, and death were thought to be controlled by a powerful being in the sky.  As such, every effort was made to placate this huge ‘God’ in hopes of avoiding bad things.

Elaborate rituals and belief systems were devised in an attempt to figure out how to have good weather, victory over enemies, plentiful food, good health, and survival after death.   Surprisingly, many of these archaic and erroneous beliefs are still held today by those with non-inquiring minds.

Up to now, your beliefs about life and death may have been based upon only what you could sense.  Again, it’s as though you have been examining life through a tiny pinhole.  But that’s all you could sense so you mistakenly thought that’s all there was.  With that limited vision, you may have thought – as did people in the Dark Ages and earlier – that:

1. this earthly life is a chaotic, senseless, and scary time of inescapable suffering.

2. you can make mistakes that result in, you guessed it, more suffering – only this time for eternity and involving lots of fire.

3. when your physical body, and that of your loved ones die, that’s the end of life.

4. IF there is an afterlife, ‘the dead’ know nothing until some future resurrection and judgement day. (That’s when their bodies come out of the grave, rise up into the sky, and learn whether they will play golden harps or fritter for eternity.)

5. An alternative version of this ancient and bizarre afterlife expectation is that ‘the deceased’ are a trillion zillion miles up in the sky somewhere. As such, they are inaccessible to you until you pass on.

6. A Higher Power – if one even exists – is distant and separate from you and is to be feared, humbly worshipped, and appeased.

7. Earth is here while spirit world, if there really is one, is out there somewhere with a dividing line – a veil – in between.

This list of misunderstandings, that greatly affect the quality and probably the quantity of earthly lives, goes on and on.

Fortunately, there is much more to life than meets the eye.  The fearful beliefs listed above are the result of ‘a limited golf ball perspective’ versus ‘a fuller Mt. Everest view’.  I and eleven consciousness experts – Raymond Moody, Caroline Myss, Anita Moorjani, Gary Schwartz, and others – discuss contemporary understandings about the nature of the afterlife and other big questions in my book The Eleven Questions.

You can now benefit from contemporary evidence and time-tested strategies for enlarging your understanding of the greater reality.  Your expanded view of life will help you realize and demonstrate this great news: the same light, love, energy, and intelligence that created and sustains all life exists within you.

Put another way, you are an integral and beloved part of All That Is right now.  Know and showing that you are an indestructible being of consciousness / spirit helps you better handle life’s changes and challenges with style.

It may take a while to wrap your head around all this but, as you do, it will become more clear that your time on earth is a totally safe, meaningful, and magnificent adventure amidst forever.  (By the way, that’s true even when it doesn’t seem like it.)

Here are two examples of hope and joy that occurred in 2020, a very difficult time for many people.  ‘Autumn’ is a patient whose dad is fighting cancer.  (I also treat her mom with whom Autumn is extremely close.)  Autumn was sad and worried about her dad, but happy and excited about her pregnancy with a boy.

During the treatment, Autumn said her little one was moving around.  ‘He must like this’, she said.  I inquired, ‘Are there times when he is more active than usual?’  She replied, ‘When my mom and I are together.’  It was a beautiful moment that suggests the little guy can already feel love.  That moment arose as Autumn focused on ‘the good things’ – a new baby – as well as ‘the bad things’ – her dad’s illness.

The cosmic joke on all of us?  Seen from a sufficiently expanded perspective, all life’s event can become good things when we remember the big picture of life.

Another patient I’ll call ‘Rose’ had just suffered a breakup with her partner of many years.  Her loss was so great that Rose might have chosen suicide to escape the pain, but wouldn’t do that to her loved ones.

As the first big holiday after the breakup approached, Rose’s pain and sadness was very great.  She went outside to take a walk and a little boy she had never seen came up to her.  ‘Thank you for coming back to the earth’, he said.  When Rose asked what he meant by that, he walked up to her, gave her a hug, and said ‘I love you.’  Was the boy sensitive / empathic, or a messenger for angels?  Whatever the case, it was very inspiring and comforting to Rose and helped her get through the day.

I hope you take time to expand your awareness about how big life is and how important and powerful you are.  Remembering this, even a little bit more, can help you survive and even thrive through life’s greatest changes and challenges.
