This article describes a powerful way to heal past abuse, wounds, disappointments, and other challenges in your life.  It sets the stage for transforming – not despite, but because of – these earlier times.  How?  By revisiting these difficult times under deep relaxation so you can view them from a more enlightened perspective.

Your analytical brain may have labelled these past events as horrible, tragic, unfair, cruel, and hopeless.  However, your inner self can see more of the big picture of life and see the blessings and ways to healing.

I was trained to use hypnosis in 1980 while completing my master’s in clinical psychology and have used it since then with many individuals and groups.  I developed the HATS technique after working with many thousands of people who were struggling and suffering with life’s toughest changes and challenges.

I know that ‘sad and difficult’ events can SEEM tragic and beyond hope.  I’m certainly not minimizing the pain and suffering that can accompany the bodily death of beloved people and pets, relationship break-ups, financial loss, job loss, broken dreams, health problems, and a long list that humans face.

However, much collective scientific, clinical, and experiential evidence about life after death and the nature of reality provides a very high degree of certainty that you and everyone else . . .    

  1.  continue living after bodily death.
  2. do not really ‘lose’ loved ones after their earthly bodies perish since you can reunite with them when you change worlds.
  3. can enjoy a continued but different relationship with your ‘departed’ loved ones now.
  4. are an integral part of Source Energy / the Light now.
  5. receive assistance and guidance from sources variously described as angels, guides, master teachers, and higher energies.

You likely didn’t know all this evidence-based great news before.  2020 has been a challenging year for many, but it also provides huge opportunities for looking more deeply at life.  Crises can result in discovering who you are, why you are here, Who walks beside you always, and how very powerful you are.

This way of looking at things has been understood by different cultures across time.  For example, in ancient Chinese and Egyptian languages, the word for ‘crisis’ also simultaneously meant opportunity.  Ancient Greek and Roman philosophers and leaders recognized that it’s not what happens TO you that shapes your life, it’s what happens INSIDE you.  Happiness, or the lack thereof, is primarily an inside job.

The more you deeply internalize the great news listed above, the more you see there is always reason to hope. 

However, it’s important to move beyond words for fuller healing and personal transformation.  That’s why techniques like this one can have such great impact.  It’s been said that the longest journey in the world is from the head to heart.  This session under deep relaxation helps you know what I’ve been describing in your heart and head.

Here’s how the technique works . . .

First, you always have full control during hypnosis or deep relaxation.  I will lead you through a series of exercises where you alternately contract, then relax, all major muscle groups.  After those, it’s important to open mouth slightly and let facial muscles relax completely so you can deeply relax and turn down your over analyzing and limiting brain.

Then I will have you imagine, visualize, or picture several events to deepen your relaxation and prepare for this technique: walking down a flight of steps, crossing a bride over a shallow stream, and others as I count from 10 to 1.

Multi-sensory perception is important during this session so use sight, hearing, feeling, smell, and inner knowingthroughout.

Your experiences may arrive via one of two ways or both.  You may perceive a past event in a flash, like an instantaneous download.  Or it may unfold chronologically as though in a timeline.  Or, paradoxically, the instant knowing may play out as though you are watching it on TV.

I will ask a series of questions so you are in the moment of the difficult or traumatic event as much as possible.  Suspend judgment during the experience and trust your first answer.  There are no right or wrong answers, no grading, so relax.

I’ll also ask you to consider what you told yourself about the event.  What did you feel it meant for the rest of your life?  For example, some bereaved parents suffer deeply after the death of a child as they realize and selectively focus on: “He or she will never graduate from high school, get married, have children, provide grandchildren, be there when I die, etc.”

Again, I know these are real and difficult repercussions.  However, there are other aspects to focus on.  In this case, those might include: serving others in the name of my child, creating honor and meaning to her passing, evolving so I can optimally detect his visits, remembering we will see each again, etc.

The point is to be more aware of any additional negatives that you piled onto the original suffering. 

We’ll heal and transform three past events with recharging time in between.  You can review three different events or three aspects of the same one.

Focusing on just one scenario is useful, for example, if a loved one passed by suicide:

– the shock of learning what happened

– your feelings of sadness, pain, hopelessness, and anger afterwards

– the impact on family members and friends

Another example of staying with one event would be if there were multiple and very challenging events in a short period of time.  One woman’s father died when she was young.  Then her dad’s family disowned them and her mom become mentally imbalanced.  Later, the mom married an equally wounded man who become an abusive step-father.  (By the way, through self-work using techniques like this one, this woman healed and found the blessings and silver linings to this incredible list of challenges.)

If you want to fully experience this technique, it’s better to “stay with me” and focus on my voice and instructions.  However, if you experience something better and your inner knowing tells you to stay with that, follow it.  If you ‘zone out’ or fall asleep, try again when you are more rested.

If the details of any experiences seem too uncomfortable in any way, just sit quietly and don’t continue working on that area.  Or, your awareness can ‘rise up’ and watch from above as though watching a movie as an impassive observer.

Additional information may come through during the days after your session.  You may want to take notes of spontaneous memories, significant emotions, and lucid dreams.

The recommended frequency of sessions depends on a number of factors, for example, how severe the past trauma; how much time, energy, and motivation for healing; and how the sessions go for you.  Most people use it once per week for a month, then biweekly for several times, and less often.  It’s good to check in a few times per year to deal with remnants and remain clear.

Recommendations Before the Session

  • Be completely rested since deep relaxation is very conducive to sleep.
  • Sit during the session for the same reason
  • Eat a light, healthy meal beforehand so you aren’t hungry or have low blood sugar.
  • Avoid excess caffeine or sugar for 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs three days beforehand.
  • Get as relaxed as possible before the experience.
  • Wear comfortable clothing for the forty-minute session.
  • Use lip salve to stop dry lips due to open-mouth breathing.
  • Drink water and use bathroom before session.
  • Turn off any phones, pagers, or other potentially interrupting devices.
  • Don’t worry if you cough, sneeze, or clear your throat.  These need not interfere with your deeply relaxed state.
  • Shifting to remain comfortable or scratching a persistent itch doesn’t mean you’re not relaxed.
  • Set an intention to gain just what you need at this time to greatly improve your life.
  • Remember that your experiences may be subtle or dramatic.
  • Suspend judgment by your analytical brain.  Rather, pay attention to what pops up or floats in.

After the Session

  • Enjoy quiet time afterwards to internalize lessons and insights.
  • Really focus if you drive soon afterwards.
  • Journal to note additional insights from dream or waking state that may arise in the week after the session.

Disclaimer: Do not use this technique without advisement by your therapist / physician if you have a history of mental illness.  If you feel uncomfortable at any time during the session, simply open your eyes and turn off the audio program.
