Karma

Karma . . . some people think this topic is complex, mysterious, and/or difficult to change.  From my perspective, it’s quite simple.

Before diving in, I honor various religious and spiritual wisdom sources that have addressed this subject for millennia.  However, in 2020 we also have the benefit of contemporary clinical evidence that clarifies how this might work.  (I say ‘might’ because I don’t pretend to know everything about this or any topic.)

My sources for this article include insights from:

  1. Near-death experiences (NDEs), particularly reports about ‘the life review’
  2. Life Between Lives reports from Michael Newton PhD and others
  3. Input from evidential mediums (highly specific and accurate mediums with high integrity who have been validated by blind evaluations at a university and/or institute)
  4. Folk sayings that reflect long held beliefs and understandings
  5. Religious and spirituality teachings, especially from early translations

I’ll share a bit about each category before addressing specific questions about karma.

Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)
Those who nearly die and recall their experience often consider the life review to be one of the most transformational aspects.  During that part of their expanded awareness of the Light, people see and feel highlights of their good and bad thoughts, words, and deeds while on earth.  NDErs generally report this as designed to teach, not punish

During the life review, angels, guides, and Source Energy are NOT perceived as being judgmental or vengeful.  Rather, they convey unfathomable love, caring, and understanding.  (Forgiveness isn’t in the equation because they don’t condemn in the first place.)

The good news?  You don’t have to be perfect to have a mostly heavenly life and avoid ‘bad karma.’  Many people are so needlessly afraid about God and the afterlife because of archaic and erroneous past teachings.  People fear that a few poor decisions will doom them to a fiery hell forever or, if reincarnation is true, a long cycle of karmic retribution.

Would you design the universe like that if you were the most wise, caring, loving, and understanding Power / Presence that created and sustains All That Is?  Of course not.  Supposed religious teachers who seek fame, fortune, and control by scaring others blaspheme the Divine and ensure going through more fear and worry themselves.

Those reporting life reviews during their NDE also say that intention is very important.  Did you truly mean well?  Did you do your best?  This observation recognizes that we each are like children who sometimes fall down while learning to walk, then run.

Again, during a life review, you see and feel the repercussions of your thoughts, words, and deeds.  If those were mainly good, you will experience a more heavenly life review and life to come.  If they weren’t, your life – whether while on earth or in the next phase of life – will feel hellish for awhile.  You can then rest, learn, repent, grow, and try to do better the next time.  You have eternity to get it right, but why wait that long?

Life Between Lives (LBL)

LBL sessions involve long sessions under deep hypnosis as the therapist assists the client in recalling the time just before coming to earth.  That LBL sessions are more than one’s imagination is indicated by the strong similarity of reports among many thousands of clients from around the world.

During these sessions, it’s obvious that life is very much like a classroom.  People evolve by trial and error learning.  When you don’t listen to your parents about touching a hot stove, you burn your finger.  The chances are better that you’ll remember the next time.  From the LBL perspective, difficulties are seen as chosen by the person – not a punishment from an all knowing and controlling God.  Souls know that they can grow more fully and quickly by taking advanced lessons that may involve challenges and change.

Some people think that karma is designed to punish.  But LBL clients say that it’s all about love, growth, and service.  Suffering doesn’t necessarily mean you have done something wrong.  From the LBL perspective, advanced souls may choose to suffer so that beginner souls can learn to be better caregivers.  Those appearing to be horrible people may, in fact, have assumed a ‘contrast soul’ guise to assist the growth and learning of others.  The clarity, simplicity, and equity of how life is set up is sometimes stunning from this view.

Input from Evidential Mediums
As with NDEs and LBLs, evidential mediums often report that life is set up more fairly and exquisitely than we can imagine.  Many of the top mediums agree with the saying: ‘It’s all good, it’s all God.’  But people aren’t created as robots without choice.  Having a series of experiences and making poor choices allows us to know firsthand what feels good / godly versus what feels bad.  Over time and through firsthand life experiences, we learn to gravitate toward peace, joy, love, and gratitude instead of disharmony, unhappiness, hate, and hopelessness.

‘Departed’ loved ones who communicate through these mediums convey that souls choose to endure trials and tribulations to learn how to best live.  One who commits murder may volunteer to be murdered or have the earthly body of a dear one taken by violence.  The intensity of their experience greatly increases the chances that they won’t murder again.  Those who impulsively pass on by suicide sometimes express remorse to those still on earth.  They don’t have to come back and confront the same challenges.  But some choose to do that with hopefully better outcomes.  This is not suffering negative karma, but learning and growing even after the worst of the worse.

Folk Sayings
Certain sayings get passed down from one generation to the next because they contain kernels of truth.  Several that I’ve heard about the law of karma include:

  • you made your bed, now you have to sleep in it
  • what goes around comes around
  • if you want to dance, you have to pay the fiddler
  • the old cosmic boomerang strikes again

These familiar sayings recognize that we each have to – sooner or later –  take responsibility for our actions.

Religious and Spirituality Teachings
The ‘you reap what you sow’ teaching was viewed differently among major religions.  For some, the punishment or rewards were delivered on a judgment day after just one earthly experience.  For religions that believed in a cyclical series of lives, punishments or rewards arose in other times and places.

A few religions have been the primary source of fearful beliefs that we must eternally burn for our sins.  These teachings arose in the B.C. era when survival was very difficult.  Nomadic tribe members needed to strictly adhere to rules or the entire tribe might suffer.  As such, there was little room for understanding nuances, exceptions and special circumstances.  From this time period came the famous saying: ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  The ‘kill or be killed’ mentality was, again, usually necessary to live another day.

I am most familiar with Christianity after being raised Lutheran and attending Methodist theological school.  The perspectives in the previous paragraph arose from the Old Testament, but Jesus purportedly taught new laws as described in the New Testament.  Loving God, your neighbor, and yourself, and following the Golden Rule predominated in these love versus fear-based teachings.  However, some Christians – especially fundamentalist and very conservative ones – continue to focus more on hell fires and a vengeful God.

Seven Recommendations to Improve Your Karma
You can change what you may choose to experience later based on your past by living more authentically as who you really are now.  You are an eternal and infinite being of energy, spirit, consciousness who is an integral part of Source Energy now.  Deeply internalizing this great news helps you more consistently choose – on a moment to moment basis – peace, joy, love, gratitude, and enthusiasm over lower energy feelings.

When you fall down, get back up and do better the next time.  Be aware of what you put out into the world.  Improve thoughts, words, and deeds that fall short of how a loving and compassionate person would live.  Five practical steps to do this include:

1. Increase your awareness via regular centering practices such as prayer, meditation, quiet time in nature, service to others, reading quality literature, listening to inspiring music, playing with pets and children, fine-tuning yourself in body / mind / spirit.

2. Use a mini life review. Just before falling asleep, think about your day. Consider where you excelled and where you could have done better.  Pat yourself on the back for when you did well.  In instances where you fell short, visualize yourself taking the high road instead.  Doing this on a regular basis increases the chances that you’ll do better the next time you are in a similar situation.

 3. Identify and fulfill your missions. Your brief time on earth will make much more sense when you are aware of why you are here and follow that path at least part time. This is a big subject; to learn more, see article #21 at SoulProof.comand use the Identify and Fulfill Your Purpose audio program.

 4. Find other members of your tribe. Living on earth can feel lonely and discouraging for those who have intermediate to advanced energies / souls. To find others like you, attend a religious or spiritual center with other open-hearted and open-minded people.  Provide service to those in need.  Attend activities that you enjoy, for example, drum circles, martial arts, art and theater showings, holistic health care classes, nature hikes, etc.  These steps provide opportunities for expanding your circle of kindred spirits.

5. The Life Review Technique recreates the closest scenario you can have without an actual near-death experience. This session allows a firsthand glimpse of what your life review might be like if your body died today. You can better realize what amends to make and how you can upgrade your life.  Then, when you really do pass on, your life review will reflect the new and improved you.

6. The Holistic Breathing Technique is another way to increase your awareness of how you can live better now and avoid piling up additional negative karma. Set an intention to become more aware of how to release bad karma and accumulate better energies. Then start breathing and see what pops up.
