6 Ways to Discern Your Inner Wisdom

How can you best discern your inner wisdom and that of your spiritual support team?  That question is ultra-important for the quality of this earthly experience.  I’ll define a few terms before proceeding . . .

  1. The word ‘you’ in the bolded sentence above refers to your higher self / consciousness / soul / awareness / life force – not just your earthly body.
  2. The term ‘inner wisdom’ refers to your inner knowing / still small voice within / soul’s input / higher knowing.Whatever you call it, this source of wisdom and guidance often exceeds that of the human brain.
  3. The term ‘spiritual support team’ refers to your angels, guides, master teachers, soulmates, and the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists in the cosmos.(If those terms are too religious for you, replace them with more secular ones such as higher energies, creative intelligence, or cosmic consciousness.  (To learn more about these topics, see articles #13 What Is G.O.D. Really Like? and #73 Angels and Higher Energy Assistance.)
  4. Your brain-based consciousness (BBC) – that consists of your central nervous system and five senses  –  perceives less than 1% of reality.  Your BBC has a very obstructed view of reality, that is, an extremely limited ability to detect what is really real.  On the other hand, your transcendent source of consciousness (TSC) – as described in #1 and 2 above – has a less obstructed view of the nature of reality.  Your TSC accurately and reliably reports data about the big picture of life and how you can optimally participate in it.  The degree to which your TSC and BBC work together has profound effects on the quality of your earthly experience.

You may wonder what all this to do with you and your earthly experience.  To make it more relevant, I’ll share a few examples from my life when I first heard my inner voice but didn’t act upon it.  (In my defense, I didn’t know much about this topic back then.  Given my current awareness, IF I could go back and replay these moments, I would have acted differently.  I’m not proud of how I handled these situations, but I am proud of how I learned from them and found the silver linings.  Instead of continually feeling regret and self-blame, I eventually focused on finding and sharing the blessings with others.)

     A. During my junior year of college, it was clear that my first-love girlfriend of four years was breaking up with me.I had planned to visit her during the Memorial Day weekend but she cancelled it.  Scared, sad and lonely, I asked an acquaintance who sold pot to sell me $5 worth.  (I had tried it a few times before and wasn’t especially impressed.  I also had seen how it could become psychologically addictive, engender amotivational syndrome, and deter people from their goals.  However, I was in pain and wanted to stop it.  Pot helped temporarily, but caused more problems in the short and long term.)

As I stood in front of my sock drawer  – marijuana was illegal in 1974 and what narc would think to search there? – a strong and clear voice / knowing said: ‘Mark, don’t do it!’  I didn’t listen and smoked some instead of dealing with my challenges head on.  That became a once or twice weekly habit for six years until I realized how it was disrupting reaching my highest potentials.  (I finished undergrad and attended four years of grad school, but could have done even better with all parts of my life.  I quit using pot after that and haven’t used anything since.)

     B. Several years later, I made a commitment to marry a woman after dating her for only six months.(Actually, her mom asked me to marry her daughter but it’s a long story.  I was still heartbroken from my first love breakup, but wasn’t aware of that – in part – because I smoked pot occasionally and my judgment was obtunded.)  As the wedding approached, my inner knowing whispered that I was making a mistake.  However, I had already agreed and was determined to see it through.

While knotting my tie in front of a mirror before the ceremony, I noticed how very serious and unhappy I looked but even that didn’t register.  My best man and long-time dear friend pointed this out and pleaded with me to not go through with the wedding ceremony.  I grimly said that I made a commitment and would honor it.  A few years later, the relationship mutually dissolved after we realized that we really didn’t know each other and weren’t a good match.  My lack of awareness hurt others more than it would have had I listened to my inner knowing.

     C. In early 2000, all of my investments were in tech stocks. I was aware of warnings that techs were in a bubble and Greenspan’s ‘irrational exuberance’ opinion about that market sector.  However, my financial advisors said I would be fine long term after a normal correction.  A few days before the now historic tech crash, I was looking at my investment positions on my computer.  A sudden knife-like pain was accompanied by an inner knowing to play it safe and get out.  But I ignored that voice and listened to the so-called experts.  The ramifications of losing so much of our savings were many and long-lasting.

On one level, these were some of the worst moments in my life.  However, the resultant suffering motivated me to better listen to and follow my inner guidance.  And that, my friends, is an eternal benefit that became part of who I am here and now as well as in other time-space slices of life.  As such, it was well worth the cost, but I wish I would have learned my lessons more quickly.  That’s one reason why I share this topic with others: to minimize their pain and suffering so they can have a more happy, peaceful, and fulfilling time on earth.

Fueled by these and other less-than-optimal events, I began a quest to detect my inner guidance.  I’ll share the tips I learned at the end of this article.

Sensing and then following your inner voice can improve every aspect of your life.  That includes becoming more aware of guidance and assistance from your TSC and spiritual support team.  The more evolved your consciousness becomes, the less you think there really is a distinction between ‘your’ and ‘their’ guidance.  You can increasingly realize that you are sacredly interconnected with all life including highly evolved beings and G.O.D.

I’ll share a recent experience that highlighted this opportunity for me.  Two months ago, I was quite ill with pneumonia and who knows what else in this marvelous post-Covid world.  While laying on a Bio-Mat, I listened to my favorite shamanic journey audio: The Shaman’s Heart with Hemi-Sync by Byron Metcalf and Steve Roach.  Before starting, I set an intention to find and share the blessings that accompanied my illness.  (Silver linings always exist, but you may have to look for a while.)  I also prayed that I would be protected and assisted by higher energies of peace and joy, love and light.

Soon, I was in a hypnagogic state – that level of awareness between sleep and waking.  In my mind’s eye, I saw a team of beings sending me energy and healing.  They seemed to be psychically cutting out portions of bone on the left side of my skull.  (Interestingly, that’s where my sinus congestion and pressure was the worst.)  The pieces of bone were displayed in my field of vision and I saw they were forming the words: Act As a Team!

I’ve long known that I receive guidance, assistance, and love from my angels, guides, master teachers, soulmates, and the Ground of All Being.  However, there are different levels of knowing; that experience greatly increased my degree of certainty that this guidance is really real.  It was, to say the least, a deeply moving experience, and I’ve posted a sign with those words that I see daily.  I’ve also incorporated the ‘Act As a Team’ reminder into my daily prayers and meditation.  You’re welcome to use it as well.

6 Ways to Detect Your Inner Wisdom and That of Your Spiritual Support Team

To prepare yourself, pray and intend daily to become more aware of wisdom and guidance from your higher self and spiritual support team.  Spend at least 15 minutes of quiet time each day so you can detect that.  Seated meditation is best for some people, but others do better with ‘walking meditations’ or other activities while in nature such as gardening.  (To learn other ways to quiet your brain’s over-activity and remember the wisdom that you are, see articles #51 Meditation, Yoga, and Relaxation, and #77 Centering Practices.)

Over time, this prepares you to optimally benefit from the following specific approaches . . .

  1. Before falling asleep, ask for clarity to know what to do about a certain situation.Set an intention that the answers will ‘pop up’ and ‘float in’ before your waking consciousness fully engages.  (See article #89 Prayers)
  2. After meditating or otherwise getting deeply relaxed, ask that you receive a clear and instant ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer to a question.Don’t let your brain get into the act with ‘Hmm, let’s see, what is the correct answer.  Just let a quick answer pop up and float in.  (Use your primary sensory orientation: If you are more visually oriented, see the answer come in; if auditory, hear it; if kinesthetic, feel it; if cognizant, know it.)
  3. Use the Ask Your Soul, Angels, and G.O.D. Technique on a regular basis. This session involves very deep relaxation and guided imagery as I ask you the ten most commonly asked questions people wonder about.  In addition, there are several ‘fill in the blank’ questions you can ask.  After each of these, several minutes of silence allow you time to detect your input and that of your support team.  (To learn more, see article #71 Ask Your Soul, Angels, and G.O.D.)
  4. Set an intention to clearly know the optimal answer(s) to a specific question. Then use the Holistic Breathing Technique without thinking about your question.  At the end of the session, a surprisingly wise and comprehensive answer will likely float up.
  5. As described above, setting an intention before starting The Shaman’s Heart audio program. This powerfully soulful approach has become one of my ‘go to’ techniques for clear contact with my inner self, spiritual support team, and The Light.
  6.  Most importantly, be aware of clear and concise input that arrives rapidly and seemingly out of nowhere. For me, this input arrives most often while I’m working in nature, exercising, meditating, taking a shower, and around 3am while sleeping.  My messages ‘from spirit’ are often short and to the point.  They seem much more obvious and important than usual waking thoughts from my brain.

As with many things, practice makes perfect.  Give these approaches some time and notice how discerning wise input eventually becomes normative for you.  Caution: don’t make big decisions based on your initial efforts; rather, try little things and see how it works out.  To assist that process, write down what arises so you have objective records to review later.

I hope this information and resources help you, an awakening human, remember what your higher self already knows quite well.  I also hope that this process will improve your relationship with higher energy assistants so you always act as a team
